I have a deadline cob today, but I’ve decided Oppo and tool storage is more important.

After selling the house, my bank account looking like an aggressive puffer fish, and the missus complaining about my existing tool box, it is time for an upgrade. I have a small tool box that overfloweth with sockets and wrenches and all sorts of stuff. It is a puzzle to shut it. Plus I have a big plastic box for the bigger items that don’t fit, air tools, air sockets, big c-clamps, little c-clamps, levels, sander......

What is the Oppo hive knowledge on a rolling tool chest? Do you use one? Are they like boats implants where you should always go bigger because you’ll end up wanting too? Do you just use peg board? Am I wasting my money?

I’ve got my eye on these two and yes I’ve looked on CL. The selection is ....disappointing.

The Craftsman ball bearing boxes are a good box at very reasonable price point. For non-professional use, they’ll last you the rest of your life.

Not sure where you’re located but Menards’ Masterforce toolboxes are actually really well built. My dad has one and someone was telling me that they are basically one of the namebrand’s just relabeled, I forgot which one though. If you’re not near a Menards I’m sure you could have it shipped

I hadn’t thought about looking at Menards. I’ll have to check them out.

Not sure I should be giving advice.

So you’re looking for a rollaway and not semi permanent garage storage solutions?

If you want to get into the prosumer market I’d go on Tooltopia and see what they have. Brands like Sunnex offer great storage solutions for a fraction of the cost of the big tool manufacturers. And there is hardly any difference between a nice rollaway from those boxes on Tooltopia vs mine.

LOL I know what you mean about overstuffed tool boxes. I keep meaning to buy a nice-sized tool chest, but I always get distracted by all the tools that the money could go towards instead.

That said, I’ve actually heard good things about Harbor Freight’s “U.S. General” brand chests...

That’s a bit overkill for me. I would like it though. It would turn the new garage into a single car for sure.

The US General boxes from Harbor Frieght are actually pretty good. Far better than the last Craftsman box I had, which was wildly disappointing. The only exception is the lock, the locks on the HF tool boxes are a freaking joke. I don’t lock my boxes, so I personally don’t care.

i have this spectacular tool box. its just dumb, how simple and nicely dumb it is. i got it from an estate sale. it is on large casters. it is just over waist high.......... BUT it is actually 4 smaller tool cabinets that have been captured with angle iron. two face out one way, and the others face out on the other side. it has a deck plate top, and a vice. it has bars to secure the doors, so that they wont open, and padlocks to catch that.

the thing that amazes me is how much simpler it is to round up some simple cabinets like the guy used, than it is to find one big one to suit needs. you can buy the smaller cabinets at garage sales for maybe $50 max if youre feeling real generous. and angle iron doesnt cost that much either.

has enough room to hold a large number of my worthwhile tools, securely...... and still has room left over.....

wish i had some pictures of it......

I just picked up an older craftsman bottom with a Napa branded top box for $500, from a coworker’s husband, who are downsizing as they approach retirement age.

It’s nothing fancy, but it’s in great shape, and all my tools fit, plus room for a couple five gallon pails of tools that came with. As you can see now I need a bigger garage... If you want to buy new that’s definitely a thing, but if you can wait it couldn’t hurt to keep an eye on Craigslist. I actually spotted this through a local Facebook buy/sell, then talked to coworker the next day. Apparently he had a few people come look at it but he didn’t like them so he refused to sell even at his asking price, which was more than what I paid.
